Teaching Strategies: Creative Curriculum
Studies

Teaching Guides feature studies, hands-on, project-based investigations of topics that are relevant to children’s everyday experiences. Studies are exciting and engaging. They tap into children’s natural curiosity, resulting in a learning environment that is both fun and intentional. The study approach is a method of integrating content learning through children’s in-depth investigations of a meaningful topic. Children raise questions about the topic, and, through exploration and discovery, they find answers to their questions. The study approach allows for deep, firsthand exploration of topics that interest children, offering a myriad of ways to learn about each topic. Plus, the study approach not only allows children to gain a deeper understanding of the topic, but also encourages them to develop skills across all domains as they apply the investigative process.

Developmental Areas

The objectives cover 9 areas of development and learning, including broad developmental areas, content areas, and English language acquisition. The objectives are organized into nine areas of development and learning. Four of these areas focus on child development: social– emotional, cognitive, physical, and language. The remaining five areas focus on content learning, which has its roots even in these younger years. While some of these skills are ones that children will begin acquiring in preschool, teachers and caregivers support content learning from infancy by creating a language rich environment; building trusting relationships; and individualizing the experiences that they provide throughout the day on the basis of children’s strengths, needs, and interests.

Responsive Caregiving Through Linking Curriculum and Assessment

Before beginning any journey, you need to know where you are heading. When implementing the curriculum, the objectives for development and learning is our guide. These objectives define the skills, knowledge, and behaviors that children will acquire in our program. The progressions span the years from birth through kindergarten, so teachers and caregivers can consider full developmental sequences as they scaffold children’s learning and track children’s progress.
